It has been a little while since I have been able to create a worthwhile post for the I Do Web Marketing blog. This is due to the rapid growth of Novel Concept Studio so far in 2009. Things have gone so well in the early goings of 2009, that there are major plans in the works for the company coming soon. As businesses move to better spend their advertising dollars, SEO and internet marketing are at a premium right now and Novel Concept Studio is therefore thriving in the current economy
Last week Novel Concept Studio launched a new marketing plan geared for the small business owner. After partnering with templatemonster.com, Novel Concept Studio unveiled a complete web presence setup and ongoing marketing plan for $399.99/month. You choose a template provided by templatemonster.com, you’ll receive free customization for the template with the company logo and information, and then Novel Concept Studio will provide ongoing internet marketing services for that website. In today’s economy, having a web presence for your business is vital. This allows businesses to achieve that web presence for a relatively low cost. The amazing thing is we have not even begun our marketing of this product and things are going well with it already. Plans are for an April 1st marketing campaign launch with businesses in the Phoenix metro area.
Not only this, but Novel Concept Studio has also finished putting the touches on a complete rebranding process. Make no mistake about it, this has been a rather large undertaking. We wanted our tagline to be more of an emphasis, “Expand your web presence.” This tagline was then taken to the drawing board to enhance our logo for this message. So the new logo has been unveiled as well. This, of course, means completely disposing of all marketing material and stationery and having everything re-ordered! We felt the rebranding was necessary to achieve our long term goals. We wanted a logo and tagline that better represented our company’s focus and we feel this will set us up for higher levels of success. East Valley Creative did a fantastic job throughout this process and I highly recommend them!
It was also important to have the rebranding in place for the upcoming project over at www.novelseotools.com. The tools are being developed to be commercialized at an affordable rate for just about every webmaster out there. We have advertising lined up on several high profile websites and through a couple of webmaster and marketing magazines as well. Because of the anticipated exposure, it was important that our rebranding be completed soon. We are shooting for a Q2 release of the SEO Tools suite.
Alright, enough about that. Since the affiliate marketing series of posts I had in December was such a success, I’ll most likely be looking to compile another series here soon. Although I do want to go into more detail regarding the affiliate marketing process, I want to cover another topic here in this next series. I’ll come back to the affiliate marketing arena soon. 1. Unrar.
2. Burn or mount the image.
3. Install the game.
4. Install the included update.
5. Copy the cracked content over from the Crack directory on the DVD to
your installation\base\bin\ directory.
If you have the The Eastern Realm expansion installed, copy the cracked
content to the base\bin directory of the expansion as well.
6. Play the game by starting \base\bin\settlers6.exe.
If you run the game with the start menu shortcut or with the
"Play Settlers 6.exe" it will start a loader which will run autoupdate
and might overwrite the cracked executable in case of future updates.

to think and change their style of play to avoid being out-thought by the
game. It will learn counter attacks that target your weaknesses and look to
exploit any repetitive tactics players use.

Defenders react better to danger, closing down the ball and charging at
shots and the goalkeepers will hold shots that are closer to them as well.
Teammates will make more intelligent runs into space and the close control
has been sharpened to ensure quick and fluid passing and speedy attacks can
be built. The next gen versions will also feature extensive edit modes so
players can completely customise their PES 2008 experience.

Ubuntu 9.04 Boots in 21.4 Seconds

There are only two days left until the third Alpha version of the upcoming Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) will be available for testing), and... we couldn't resist the temptation to take the current daily build for a test drive, before our usual screenshot tour, and taste the "sweetness" of that evolutionary EXT4 Linux filesystem. Announced on Christmas Eve, the EXT4 filesystem is now declared stable and it is distributed with version 2.6.28 of the Linux kernel and later. However, the good news is that the EXT4 filesystem was implemented in the upcoming Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha 3 a couple of days ago and it will be available in the Ubuntu Installer, if you choose manual partitioning (see the screenshot below for details). The bad news is that EXT4 will not be the default filesystem for the Ubuntu OS until version 9.10, due for release in late October this year.

OK, OK... so how will the end user benefit from this EXT4 filesystem? Well, first of all, the whole system will be much faster and more reliable compared to one with EXT3 (I guess that some of you still remember theFirefox/Ext3 issue), it will boot faster (the current article proves that) and it's able to handle files with sizes of up to 16 TB (terabytes). But these are just a few of the features brought by the fourth extended filesystem, for more details you can check the Wikipedia entry for EXT4.

We've tested the boot process of a default Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04 Alpha (Build 20090112.1) installation on two machines, an AMD Sempron 1.8 Ghz, 80 GB IDE hard drive with 512 RAM DDR and an Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 running at 2.2 Ghz, 250 GB SATA hard drive with 4 GB RAM DDR2. Here are the results of our tests:

· Ubuntu 8.10 with EXT3 filesystem boots in 31.8 seconds (on the AMD Sempron system);
· Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha (Build 20090112.1) with EXT3 filesystem boots in 28.3 seconds (on the AMD Sempron system);
· Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha (Build 20090112.1) with EXT4 filesystem boots in 23.1 seconds (on the AMD Sempron system).

· Ubuntu 8.10 with EXT3 filesystem boots in 26.8 seconds (on the Intel Core 2 Duo system);
· Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha (Build 20090112.1) with EXT3 filesystem boots in 24.5 seconds (on the Intel Core 2 Duo system);
· Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha (Build 20090112.1) with EXT4 filesystem boots in 21.4 seconds (on the Intel Core 2 Duo system)!

The boot times were calculated from the moment the GRUB boot loader appeared on the screen and until the login manager was displayed. As you can see, there is an approximately 8.7 second difference between an Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) installation and an Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha (Jaunty Jackalope) one on the first system and 5.4 second difference on the second system. But this does not stop us from hoping that the boot times will decrease even more until the final version of Ubuntu 9.04 hits the streets.

Currently, EXT4 can only be applied from the text mode installation of Ubuntu 9.04 (the Alternate CD). Don't forget to check our website on Thursday for the screenshot tour of Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) Alpha 3 when we will reveal even more goodies from the Ubuntu land.

Later Edit: We apologise for not having listed all the results of our tests. Therefore, we've added the missing two tests: Ubuntu 8.10 and Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha (Build 20090112.1) with EXT3 on the Intel Core 2 Duo system.

Microsoft Celebrated for Contribution to HDTV Standard With Sony

Microsoft together with Sony were celebrated for their contributions to the High Profile of H.264/MPEG-4AVC standard that directly impacts the quality of the HDTV video signal, both in terms of storage but also of its delivery. The two companies are among the members of the Joint Video Team Committee, which received the 2008 Primetime Emmy Engineering Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

"This award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recognizes a broad and collaborative effort that has yielded significant technical achievements in entertainment technology," said Gary Sullivan, video architect at Microsoft.

The work done by Sony and Microsoft is incorporated into the H.264/AVC video coding technology. In fact, H.264/AVC supports High Definition images because of the standard specification that the two companies helped evolve. The fruits of the work poured into High Profile of H.264/MPEG-4AVC can be enjoyed by consumers via high definition video served not only through Internet Protocol television (IPTV), but also through mobile devices, satellite, broadcast and cable T.V., and even on Blu-ray Discs.

Sullivan, also a chairman of the Joint Video Team Standards Committee, added that "considering the extensive historical development of the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile specification, many more than the nine named companies deserve credit for their contributions to this standard and its resulting applications. However, Sony and the other recognized companies were certainly key contributors to the development of the standard, and should be applauded for their contributions."

Teruhiko Suzuki, Distinguished Engineer at Sony Corporation, indicated that the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC standard is an indispensable part of the infrastructure making up the HDTV universe. "The achievement of the JVT work is outstanding and well deserved of a Primetime Emmy Engineering Award. We would like to congratulate all JVT members for this notable accomplishment," Suzuki said.

WHAT IS A SOFT WARE ENGINEERING?

In case you've read the first volume from Frank Herbert's “Dune” series and in case you first read it in the 90's like I did, you might remember the scene where Paul reads some sort of video book before the spaceship reaches Arrakis and you might have thought: “Man! Books with a screen instead of actual pages! How cool is that?"

Well, eBooks have been a normal part if our routine technical environment for quite a while now, but only when read from a special E-book reader such as that provided by Pixelar can someone truly get that “electronic book” feel. And it's much more comfortable and practical than reading books at your desktop computer, or even on a notebook.

MSI GX720 Notebook Review

Although most of the headlines containing the word “MSI” include the words “Wind” or “netbook” lately, the truth of the matter is that the company has a fairly long history of manufacturing portable computing systems dedicated to most consumer segments out there. And that's exactly the case with its GX720 series, launched back in early September 2008, dedicated to gamers and multimedia fans alike, which we've recently had the chance of testing.

Of course, it's rather hard to imagine a system that will please both categories mentioned above, but the GX720 certainly manages to do so, at least to some degree. Not only that, but it also does it in style, and with a couple of innovations that will certainly make it stand out from the crowd, either from the design or the performance point of view.
As we've been able to see throughout our tests, the GX720 is the kind of machine you can take along to a LAN party without fearing that your “foes'” desktops will prove superior. However, after the LAN party is over, you can also easily connect it to pretty much any type of display (HDTV, projector, PC monitor) in order to watch a movie in HD, and you won't even need a surround sound system, simply because the GX720 carries its own 4.1 high-definition audio system built right in its case (yes, the speakers AND the subwoofer).

Although office work is not exactly what the designers probably had in mind for the GX720, MSI's notebook has what it takes for such tasks as well. Plus, its entire configuration is extremely battery-friendly, while the Wireless-N module helps it get online very fast.

World's First Electric Bandage to Be Available Over-the-Counter

As weird as it may sound, it has already been proven that electricity can help cuts and wounds heal faster because our cells work like tiny chemical batteries and if wounds short-circuit them, then electricity helps heal them. So, it was only a matter of time until a company decided to try and make some cash out of this. This way, a small medical firm has recently released the world's first electric bandage, hoping to make it available over-the-counter soon.Arizona-based Vomaris Innovations entered its Prosit adhesive bandage on the market, which uses microscopic batteries mounted on a flexible membrane to pass a tiny amount of current - 1.2 volts - over the affected skin. The Prosit has won FDA approval to be used in hospitals, after a series of clinical trials proved that it jump-started healing for all patients.

"There's no question it works," says James McCoy, a professor of surgery at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, convinced of this fact after the Prosit saved a patient from a potential amputation and healed another's severe burns.

What Prosit does is activate and generate a voltage at the surface when moistened. When active, it prevents microbial penetration and it can be left on for seven days. Moreover, the Prosit also reduces pain. But, physical advantages are not the only ones it provides, as these electric bandages also save money. Thus, healing a wound using standard dressings costs an average of $1,000 per wound per patient. The Prosit costs hospitals an average of $140 per patient.

Vomaris, with eight employees and sales of less than $500,000 a year, expects to win FDA approval for an over-the-counter version later this year. That seems like a stretch to medical experts such as McCoy, who doesn't think patients should be self-medicating with the Prosit until more research has been conducted. However, the company hopes to distribute the Prosit alongside traditional bandages in pharmacies and big-box retailers. There hasn't been any retail price set yet.

Municipalities open their GIS systems to citizens

Many public administrations already use open source Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to let citizens look at public geographic data trough dedicated Web sites. Others use the same software to partially open the data gathering process: they let citizens directly add geographic information to the official, high-quality GIS databases by drawing or clicking on digital maps.

For instance, the online burning permit sales service of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) allows citizens to declare precisely where they would like to burn woody debris. High precision is essential in deciding whether a permit is obtainable, as well as when and under what conditions: if there is a high fire risk in the area and day for which a user asks for a permit, the software must refuse it. The Web site, however, makes it easy to enter the location with the greatest possible resolution: users first type an address into a form to get an approximate location on the map, then zoom at will and finally click on the exact spot for which they are applying for a permit.

There are three immediate benefits in this procedure. Single citizens save money and trips to the local fire warden. The community as a whole saves money too, since permits are managed via computer, and also gains in safety. All burning locations appear on one separate digital map as soon as their permits are granted, giving to emergency response teams "a synoptic, real-time view of who is burning where which was simply never available before", as DNR employee Steve Lime puts it.

Another DNR application works in a similar way to capture locations where tagged fish were caught: you zoom in until you can click on the exact point of the lake or river where you found the fish, then enter a code found on the fish's tag and other relevant details. The Web site also won an Award from the Organization of Fish and Wildlife Information Managers for the best wildlife-related GIS Web-based Technical Application.

In Italy's Tuscan province of Arezzo a new GIS system, announced at the 2008 GFOSS day in Italywill soon let selected, registered citizens enter more complex geographic data. Single professionals and employees of environmental or professional associations will be able to draw single points and polygons to enter the exact location, shape, and approximate area of several landscape features or hazards, such as natural resources and landfills with environmental or geologic hazards.

All of these portals run well-known open source software. The common part is MapServer, developed in Minnesota by Lime and others, which can build digital maps on the fly and serve them over the Web. Both DNR Web sites use custom scripts in Perl or Ruby on Rails that connect all the other parts toPostGIS or MySQL database back ends. Besides MapServer and PostGIS, the Arezzo Web site will run on Java and Apache Tomcat as servlet engine. The DNR Web pages communicate with MapServer through the dBox DHTML Web mapping library, developed by Lime and others at DNR. Lime says DNR plans not to use dBox for any new development, since "there are now better tools, such as OpenLayers, available." For geocoding -- that is, mapping street addresses to geographic coordinates -- DNR uses the Yahoo! Maps geocoding API, which the organization found more accurate than Google for rural areas of Minnesota.

The process

A non-technical but important characteristic of all these services is their integration with existing infrastructures and needs. None of these applications was invented just to impress taxpayers. They either solve well-defined, concrete problems or replace non-digital versions of procedures and services already adopted in public administrations.

More than anything else, these Web sites are relevant because of the way they create public GIS data or implement, as they call it in Arezzo, "participated planning": that is, what they allow citizens to do, how, and where. These are all cases in which citizens outside the public administrations can directly add to official GIS databases coordinates, areas, or other spatial data in natural formats that need no further conversion and are easily reusable in the future. What is open here is the data management process, not just the software.

The success of initiatives like OpenStreetMap or the availability of Yahoo! and Google Maps APIs may make you think that people may create services like these and many more all by themselves, without getting any bureaucrat involved. However, in order to benefit the most from digital maps and other spatial data, citizens need such data to be officially inserted in, and completely integrated with, the maps and databases public administrations use to plan roads, zoning, and everything else.

Citizens may use Web sites like those mentioned here to request services as different as bus stops, trekking permits, or new post offices. Other uses may include signalling construction abuses, damages to public property, or illegal dumpsters. We may draw our preferred public bus routes on a map in our City Council official Web site.

Of course, to make all this work in practice, public administrations should also clarify the data ownership situation. Who owns data directly and freely provided from citizens? What license should apply to those data or any derived ones? This, however, is a separate issue, not really related to open source software.

Open source GIS software is already good enough to run official, mission-critical GIS sites and services. These examples prove another, probably more important point: open source GIS can be used to get citizens directly involved in the management of public data and property. Indeed, it may be the only feasible way to achieve such a goal.

Ever since I started reviewing software for Linux, I've never said anything about applications designed exclusively for children. We can't ignore the fact that nowadays, kids are more in touch with computers than they had been a decade ago.

First of all, you should know that it is designed for children three years old and up. In fact, I've seen online albums done by teenagers and adults, and the results were amazing. So, if you have talent, I guess anything is possible.
This program's interface is very intuitive and easy to use, and that's why anyone can use it. Tux Paint makes use of several amusing sounds effects, therefore, kids will not get bored, as the jingles really help maintaining an entertaining environment.
[...] The icons are large and intuitive, so kids will not encounter problems in associating them with what they do. For almost any clicked button, a comment can be seen at the bottom of the screen.

Clonezilla Live 1.2.1-37 Improves Microsoft Windows Cloning

Steven Shiau announced a few minutes ago the immediate availability of Clonezilla LiveCD 1.2.1-37, a Linux-based minimal operating system that can help you clone systems. The new version of Clonezilla is now powered by Linux kernel 2.6.26-13, based on Debian Lenny repository (01/26/2009), two new languages were added and the Microsoft Windows cloning implementation was greatly improved. "We are happy to announce this new stable release. In this release, we have 2 more new languages, and some improvement about cloning MS windows." - said Steven Shiau in the official release announcement. Without any further introduction, let's see what exactly has changed since the latest stable release,Clonezilla 1.2.1-23:

· Updated Linux kernel to version 2.6.26-13;
· Now based on Debian Lenny repository (01/26/2009);
· Added Italian language;
· Added Spanish language;
· Updated French translation;
· Updated Chinese translation;

How to Turn Linux into a PS3 or Xbox 360 Media Server

Turning your personal computer into a media server means that you will be able to play video (AVI, MPEG, MPEG-2, DivX, XviD, MKV, WMV, MP4 or even DVD ISOs or VIDEO_TS folders) and audio files (MP3, OGG, FLAC or WMA) or view your favorite photos (JPG, PNG, GIF, TIFF) stored on your PC's hard drive on a big screen TV set or LCD/Plasma high-definition display, via a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 console. The following tutorial will teach you how to set up such a media server, step-by-step, from configuring your PC and gaming console, to installing and setting up the media server software in your Linux box. We've offered two media server installations, so you can choose whichever fits you best.

STEP 1 - Setting up your Linux machine for Media Serving

Set up the PC network connection

You will need to have:

1. Two 10/100 or 10/100/1000 (recommended) network cards;
2. An Ethernet cable (it has to be as long as the distance between the PC and the console).

Assuming you already have a network card on your PC:

· Insert the second network card into an empty PCI slot on your motherboard.

· Connect one head of the Ethernet cable on the second network card and the other one into the gaming console.

· Open a terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and type the following command:

sudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces

· Add the following lines (copy and paste) to the end of the file:

# The secondary network interface
auto eth1
iface eth1 inet static
address 192.168.1.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
network 192.168.1.0

· Save the file and reboot your PC.

Set up the console network connection

For PlayStation 3:

· Go to Settings -> Network Settings -> Media Server Connection -> Enable

· Go to Settings -> Network Settings -> Internet Connection Settings.

· Select "Yes" when asked if you want to perform Internet connection settings.

· Select "Easy" and wait for the wizard to check the network configuration.

· Select "Manual" and enter the following:

IP Address: 192.168.1.10
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Router: 192.168.1.1
Primary DNS: (type the first DNS from your provider)
Secondary DNS: (type the second DNS from your provider)

Editor's note: To see the DNS of your ISP (Internet Service Provider) type the following command in a terminal: cat /etc/resolv.conf. The two IP addresses can be used in the above configuration.

· Select "Automatic" for MTU.

· Select "Do Not Use" for Proxy Server.

· Select "Enable" for UPnP.

· Hit X to accept the settings and test the connection.

For Xbox 360:

· Go to System Blade of the Xbox 360 dashboard and select Network Settings.

· Click Edit Settings, then go to Basic Settings. You will see IP Settings, DNS Settings and other options.

· Click IP settings and select "Manual" to set the IP address, subnet mask and gateway manually:

IP Address: 192.168.1.10
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

· Go back to the previous menu and select DNS settings.

· Select "Manual" to set the DNS addresses manually.

STEP 2 - Installing and configuring a Media Server

Method One - uShare Media Server

Advantages:

· Works with PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360;
· Very easy, one-time configuration.

Disadvantages:

· Command-line only;
· You will be able to play ONLY the video/audio/image files supported by the consoles.

The GeeXboX uShare is a free UPnP Audio/Video & DLNA Media Server for Linux platforms. It works with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 gaming consoles. uShare is very easy to install; just open your package manager software, search for ushare, libdlna and libupnp, and install them.

Installing uShare in Ubuntu:

Open Synaptic from System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager

Enter your password when asked and search for ushare. Mark the "ushare" package for installation...

Click the "Mark" button when asked if you want to install the "libdlna0" required package:

Click the "Apply" button to install the packages. Close Synaptic when the installation is complete.

Configure uShare:

The uShare configuration file will be found under the /etc folder. To edit the file, open a terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and type the following command:

sudo gedit /etc/ushare.conf

The configuration file has no more than 10 (ten) settings. The following 5 (five) are the ones you need to edit:

1. USHARE_IFACE=eth1 (Put here the name of the network interface you use for sharing (see STEP 1). Usually it's the second one, eth1).
2. USHARE_PORT=49200 (Put here the port you want uShare to use for serving media. 49200 is fine!).
3. USHARE_DIR= (Put here the path of the folders you want to share. For example, let's say you want to share your home folder's Video folder... just type: USHARE_DIR=/home/YOURUSERNAME/Video)
4. ENABLE_XBOX=yes (Type yes here if you have an Xbox 360 gaming console. Otherwise leave it as it is).
5. ENABLE_DLNA=yes (Type yes here if you have a PlayStation 3 gaming console. Otherwise leave it as it is).

Save the configuration file when you're done and execute the following command to start the uShare media server:

sudo /etc/init.d/ushare start

For an easy usage of the uShare media server, it's a very good idea to create a desktop shortcut of the reload function. Otherwise, you will always have to open a terminal and type the reload command when you add/delete files to the shared folder.

Right click on your desktop and select Create Launcher...

Type "uShare Media Server" (without quotes) in the "Name" field and then paste the following line in the "Command" field:

gksu /etc/init.d/ushare reload

You can also add a nice icon if you click on the left icon box. Various icons can be found under the/usr/share/icons/Human/scalable folder. Click OK to create the launcher.

Editor's note: Every time you will add or delete files in the shared folder (remember that from now on you will use ONLY the folder(s) you've set up in the uShare configuration file, for storage of the videos you want to play) you must reload the uShare media server by double clicking on the desktop shortcut.

Method Two - PS3 Media Server

Advantages:

· Has Graphical User Interface;
· You will be able to play all of the video file formats;
· Has auto-refresh;
· Flickr/Picasa photo viewing support;
· DVD ISO image playback;
· Multi-platform.

Disadvantages:

· Works ONLY with PlayStation 3.

The PS3 Media Server is a DLNA compliant UPnP Media Server for the PlayStation 3 gaming console. PS3 Media Server is written in Java, therefore it can be used on Linux, Windows and Macintosh platforms. It doesn't require any installation! Even if the PS3 Media Server is able to play all the video files out there, some of them (the ones that are not supported by the PlayStation 3, yet) will require real-time video transcoding. For the transcoding operation you will need to have at least an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 1 GB of RAM, especially for 720p/1080p high-definition files, such as the MKV ones.

Installing PS3 Media Server in Ubuntu:

As we've mentioned above, the PS3 Media Server does not require any installation, just grab the latest version from hereand extract the archive on your home folder. It is written in Java, so make sure that you have a valid Java installation in your PC. For an easy usage, we will create a desktop shortcut of the PS3 Media Server executable (otherwise, you will always have to open the home folder and double click the executable, in order to start it).

ATTENTION: The Mplayer, Mencoder and FFMpeg packages need to be installed in your Linux box. Ubuntu users can install them using the Synaptic Package Manager or by issuing the following command in a terminal: sudo apt-get install mplayer mencoder ffmpeg

Right click on your desktop and select Create Launcher...

Type "PS3 Media Server" (without quotes) in the "Name" field and type the path where you've extracted the PS3 Media Server archive in the "Command" field:

/home/YOURUSERNAME/pms-linux-1.03/PMS.sh

Note: You need to replace YOURUSERNAME in the above line with your username (e.g. /home/marius/pms-linux-1.03/PMS.sh).

You can also add a nice icon if you click on the left icon box. Various icons can be found under the/usr/share/icons/Human/scalable folder. Click OK to create the launcher.

Configure the PS3 Media Server

Just like the "installation" part, the PS3 Media Server does not require any configuration. Once started, the server will immediately appear on the XMB (PlayStation 3's interface).

However, we suggest the following settings:

1. Set the character encoding of your PlayStation 3, under the "General Configuration" tab. To see what charset your PS3 is using, go to System settings -> Charset on the XMB.
2. Under the "Navigation/Share Settings" tab check the following options: Hide #Video Settings# Folder, Hide file extensions, Hide trancoding engine names.
3. Under the "Navigation/Share Settings" tab add the folders where you keep your video, audio and image files that you want to play on the PlayStation 3, in the "Shared folders" box. Otherwise, the PS3 Media Server will list the entire file system!
4. Under the "Transcoding Settings" tab you can change the Video quality settings to:

keyint=1:vqscale=1:vqmin=1 /* Lossless Quality, Crazy Bitrate */ (for 720p video files)
keyint=1:vqscale=1:vqmin=2 /* Best Quality */ (for 1080p video files)

Also, setting the Audio to "2 channels Stereo" is a good idea. ONLY if you own a HDMI 5.1 capable receiver you can switch to the "6 channels 5.1" option.

5. When everything is set up, and ONLY if the PS3 Media Server window is "bothering" you (because it doesn't have a tray icon yet), you can check the "Start minimzed" option under the "General Configuration" tab. However, this will hide the PS3 Media Server interface. To get it back, you need to edit the PMS.conf file in your home folder, and replace the "true" value of the minimized option with "false" (without quotes).

Linux Kernel Vulnerabilities in Ubuntu 8.10. Update Today.

On January 29th the Ubuntu developers announced the availability of a new important security update for the Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) operating system (also applies to Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu). The update patches six security issues (see below for details) discovered in the Linux kernel packages of Ubuntu 8.10, that could "help" a local attacker execute malicious code, causing system crashes/hangs, leading to DoS (Denial of Service) attacks. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to update your system as soon as possible!

The following Linux kernel vulnerabilities have been fixed:

1. The ATM subsystem failed to manage socket counts. Because of this, a local attacker could hang the vulnerable system, leading to a DoS (Denial of Service) attack. This issue was discovered by Hugo Dias.

2. The inotify subsystem included watch removal race conditions. Because of this, a local attacker could hang the vulnerable system, leading to a DoS (Denial of Service) attack.

3. sendmsg failed to release the allocated memory, in some cases. Because of this, a local attacker could force a vulnerable system to run out of free memory, leading to a DoS (Denial of Service) attack. This issue was discovered by Dann Frazier.

4. PA-RISC stack unwinding was incorrectly handled. Because of this, a local attacker could crash the vulnerable system, leading to a DoS (Denial of Service) attack. This issue was discovered by Helge Deller.

5. The ATA subsystem failed to set timeouts. Because of this, a local attacker could hang the vulnerable system, leading to a DoS (Denial of Service) attack.

6. The ib700 watchdog timer was incorrectly checking the buffer sizes. Because of this, a local attacker could crash the vulnerable system by sending specially crafted ioctl to the device, leading to a DoS (Denial of Service) attack.

These Linux kernel vulnerabilities can be fixed if you update your system to the following specific packages:

linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic 2.6.27-11.27
linux-image-2.6.27-11-server 2.6.27-11.27
linux-image-2.6.27-11-virtual 2.6.27-11.27

Don't forget to reboot your computer after this update! You can verify the kernel version by typing the sudo dpkg -l linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic command in a terminal.

Latest ATI Linux Video Driver Introduces Full OpenGL 3.0 Support

AMD has just announced a new and improved version of its ATI Catalyst Linux display driver, available for both x86 and x86_64 architectures. ATI Catalyst 9.1 introduces final and stable support for the Ubuntu 8.10 Linux operating system, full OpenGL 3.0 support, Hybrid CrossFire support and Multiview support.

While the support for Ubuntu 8.10 is now in a mature stage, the newly introduced support for Hybrid Graphics delivers to its AMD 780G/780D and ATI Radeon HD 2400/3400 owners a substantial 3D performance boost. But, the most important feature of ATI Catalyst 9.1 is the full support for OpenGL 3.0. The following OpenGL 3.0 extensions have been added in ATI Catalyst 9.1:
